Taken from the
first movement of Sonata El Sonoro, El Festejo de las Bodas
celebrates the gathering of Mexicans honoring recently married
couples. Because the custom of marriage in rural Mexico usually
prohibits any kind of elaborate honeymoon, towns people instead throw
a party. This civic event can last for days and include more
than one couple, hence the name of the work.
El Festejo is
a joyous work full of ethnic and regional influences. There is
also a piano version of the main theme which can serve as a substitute
for the traditional Mendelssohn Bridal Recessional.
